  • Exploring Knowledge: This Month’s Academic Journey

For the month of May our Primary scholars will be focusing on mammals and reviewing the 5 types of vertebrates. Mammals are varied in size, shape, and habitat. Some of the largest mammals, such as elephants, rhinos, giraffes, lions, and gorillas will easily be on view on the Primary Field Trip to the Safari Park. Smaller mammals may be more of a challenge to find. Scholars can be on the l;ookout for bats, fennec foxes, and ring-tailed lemurs.

Our Primary scholars continue to work on important reading skills, including practicing counting syllables and rhyming words through poetry. Our scholars continue working on identifying three dimensional shapes such as spheres, cylinders, and cubes. They are also practicing to count by tens and subtract numbers from one another.

  • Home Learning Adventures: Montessori Style

At home, you can encourage your child’s interest in the subjects they are learning at school. To peak their interest in the upcoming field trip, click on this link to view some of the animals at the Safari Park on live-cam. Safari Park Live Cams  Spending time looking at and talking about these animals before the trip will help your child have more curiosity and motivation to learn. You can also find books at the library or look for videos online to learn about the interesting animals at the Safari Park.

A scavenger hunt for 3-D shapes is a great at home activity. Challenge your child to look for things shaped like a cylinder, (cans, water bottles) cube (dice, Legos, RubixCube),  sphere (soccer ball, globe), cone (ice cream cones or traffic cones), or rectangular prisms ( cereal boxes, shoe boxes).

  • Leader in Me Program:

In May , for the Leader in Me program,  we will learn about standing up for ourselves.  It is important to learn how to use your voice and let others know when you are not okay with things. We’re excited to see the growth in our scholars as they practice these important life skills!

  • Engage & Create: This Month’s Project

Our field trip to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park gives us an opportunity to put our learning about animals into practice. Scholars will focus on identifying animals by name and the group they fit into. The  5 types of vertebrates are: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. The excitement of seeing these animals up close and in person is a wonderful learning opportunity.
